A few weeks ago myself and my good friend and colleague at Millie & Belle Photography, Camilla Arnold, got together at the Travelling Light Film Photography Conference in Spain and made a pact to follow our hearts and shoot a whole heap more film. To this end we decided to do a shoot entirely on film and Lucy & Alex were the perfect couple.
Personally , I love the fact that film slows me down. I’m not rattling off a million shots in the hope that one of them is a winner. I’m finding the best light, posing my couple and composing the shot for that one click and then waiting in eager anticipation as I go all old school and send the rolls off to the lab; in this case the amazing team at Carmencita. I don’t believe digital can replicate the beautiful pastel tones and flattering mood of film. Each and every photograph has been taken with love and care and precision. Film photography is meant to stand the test of time, the images are taken to be printed and cherished. With my digital work I always seem to crave this razor sharp look, annoyed with myself if I haven’t quite nailed my focus. With film, I love the romantic softness, something I believe compliments the essence of what I’m shooting and why I’ve been hired in the first place, love. It sounds cheesy, and perhaps it is, but to me love is soft, light & dreamy, and I want everything about my photographs to encapsulate this.
Thank you to Lucy and Alex for joining us on a beautiful autumn morning in the New Forest and for putting up with our constant film changes and gushing about the beautiful light – we get a little bit excited sometimes! Enjoy the photos and do more of what makes you happy people! Helen xxx
